UHMC Day Care Surgery

On the second floor of UHMC is the innovative Day Care Surgery Centre.

Saving Costs, Minimising Risks

Most patients become petrified at the very thought of having to undergo surgery, and one of the major worries is the fact that hospitalisation will be required.

Fortunately, there is a gentle option available for many patients who need to undergo surgery that does not require overnight admission in hospital.

The UHMC Day Care Surgery (also referred to as the Ambulatory Surgical Services Centre) allows patients to recuperate in their homes, thereby saving on costs of treatment and minimising risks of infection associated with in-hospital stay.

Serving Over 5,000 Each Year

The UHMC Day Care Surgery Centre has two main operating theatres as well as specialised theatres in dental, endoscopy, ophthalmology and urology.

The theatres are well equipped and maintained to the highest standard of preparedness and infection control. This has received recognition and accreditation by NHIF and both local and international insurance companies.

Over 5,000 patients are operated in our theatres each year. There are 210 surgeons with admitting rights in our theatres—they are appointed through a thorough assessment process.

Patients, who are operated upon by surgeons with admitting rights, recuperate within hours in comfortable wards or private rooms, while their accompanying visitors relax in the lounge or at the Java Coffee House located on the ground floor.

Common Procedures Include:

Laparoscopy or minimal access surgery is a type of keyhole surgery that is performed in the abdominal (belly) area.

It has advantages over traditional surgery, such as rapid recovery, reduced pain and much smaller scars.

Some of the laparoscopic surgeries done at UHMC are diagnostic laparoscopy, tuboplasty, tuboligation, removal of ovarian cysts, myomectomy, hysterectomy, hernia repair, cholecystectomy, varicocele and ligation.

A majority of the laparoscopy surgeries are performed at our Day Care Surgery Centre, meaning that patients get to go home the same day.

This is a procedure that allows a gynaecologist to look inside the uterus to diagnose and treat causes of abnormal bleeding, remove non-cancerous growths such as polyps or fibroids, or to release adhesions.

The UHMC Day Care Surgery Centre also offers in-vitro fertilization (IVF) services to couples with infertility and reproduction genetic problems.

A team of experts is available for consultation, assessment and diagnosis, leading to an open discussion on the conception options available for the couple.
